FSWA Industry Leaders Draft

A Fantasy Football Draft Plan of Attack!

So your draft is next weekend and you begin to think about last season and how you drafted Tennessee RB Chris Johnson with your first overall pick. However the magazines you purchased ranked Johnson number two overall. So what happened?

Now don’t entirely blame yourself for last season. You only did what has been a tradition of sorts among fantasy football competitors of all levels. What threw a monkey wrench into this approach was the NFL Lockout.

The NFL Lockout changed where everyone searched for fantasy football information. Instead of going to the magazine counter in early August and finding a full magazine rack you probably were probably limited in magazine choices.

You were expecting to see a trusted publication such as Fantasy Football Index however that was not published last season. A matter of fact many magazines that were published did not have updated rosters, player profiles, or updated NFL free agency moves. Just blind speculation based of 2010 stats.

Now we all know how I feel about basing all decisions on stats alone. You need analysis from former players and coaches that have insight to what is happening because fantasy football is not the same as rotisserie baseball. Basing decisions on sabermetrics, which by the way there are no sabermetric formulas in fantasy football; rather you need to be grounded in informed opinion. If there even were a sabermetrics formula it would have to be loaded with variables that would give an actuary math anxiety.

However this blog entry isn’t about my annoyance with the fantasy stat geeks rather this is about finding solid draft strategy for this coming 2012 fantasy football draft that is

  1. Cost effective
  2. Provides up to date news, is never biased by stats, and includes in-depth fantasy football advice.
  3. Has a site that is easy to navigate
  4. Most of all will be make my fantasy team competitive.

Here are some cliff notes to help you plan.

  • You need a Cheat Sheet for your draft! While mine are available on the right side there are other sources that I will list below.
  • If you are going to use a drafting app it will cost a little money but make sure it is updated with current NFL rankings. I have the best listed below.
  • Do NOT use a pay site! Just because you paid doesn’t make it better. I won a subscription to Pro Football Weekly in July of 2011 and was so impressed that I renewed my subscription in February. They are the only pay subscription I have besides the Chicago Tribune but like the Tribune they provide in depth reporting for NFL fans. No fantasy football sites advice is worthy of paying for when the leaders of the industry are the reporters who cover their NFL beat.
  • Use the information from your leagues host web site such as CBS, NFL, and ESPN.
  • Blogs such as mine are loaded with links, analysis, and experienced advice that can help you choose a plan.
  • If you are not going to read then please watch and listen! Podcast and videos are a big help for those of us who have no patience.
  • Practice! Practice! Practice! Mock drafts help you prepare your draft strategy.
  • Most of all keep things simple.

Great Free Sites!

Now while opinions differ on who is the best overall source for fantasy football advice the truth is all the sites below have different strengths and weakness.

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano a real salesmen.take any risk. Fantasy football analyst Michael Fabiano is clearly the poster boy for the stereotypical TV personality with his blinding smile and a bronze tan that would make the tanning bed mom jealous. Fantasy football enthusiast will find the sites overall fantasy content lame or even worse boring. Checkout the NFL.com Draft Kit.

Phone Apps will they help?

Now if any of these sites are not what you are looking for and you insist on not doing the work before the draft you can still use a phone app. Several are available but none are guaranteed to make your team fantasy football champs.

  • NFL Fantasy Cheat Sheet 2012 which is priced at $2.99 available on IPhone and Android. This app has been available since its conception in 2008 and is now the official NFL fantasy cheat sheet application.
  • The one that received the most positive reviews was Fantasy Football Draft GM 2012 priced at $2.99 available on IPhone and Android. This app was much more customized but sometimes confusing to configure. The app features defensive players as well.
  • Easier but not as customizable is Fantasy Football 2012 Draft IS priced at $1.49 available for Android.

Ok if you’re a fantasy novice I would buy a phone app but you may want to try more than one. A phone app can only help you identify better draft picks rather than searching for what positional needs you may require in whatever round you are drafting. If you’re a veteran you may want to consider it but I don’t see it helping you outsmart the competition.

Pay sites should you use them?

While paying for a $3.00 app is something I wouldn’t personally do I don’t think it’s unreasonable either.

However would you spend $20, $30, or even $150 dollars to win your fantasy football league? That sounds crazy right. Yet some people believe that spending big bucks will make you a winner.

While I would like to tell you they’re wrong I myself used DraftSharks.com and won my first and second fantasy football championship (2000 & 2002) in a large payout league. Sites like DraftSharks, Fantasy Guru, and RotoWire all are sites that will do the work for you but offer no guarantee that you are going to win.

The only thing that I don’t understand is why did I start using draft sharks? I played my first season of fantasy football in 1997 and didn’t know much about the game.

By luck alone I made the playoffs just on what I knew about the NFL.

In 1998 I made the playoffs again but lost in the first round.

Then in 1999 I was killing my league going 10-3 and had the top seed in the playoffs but again I was bounced in the first round.

Enter Draft Sharks!

Draft Sharks provided users with “inside information” and “in depth player analysis” as well as a “customized draft program”.

The truth is they stole the “inside information” was plagiarized from local newspapers.

The “in depth analysis” was stolen from newspaper beat writers who covered teams in depth.

However the “customizable draft program” was the key to why I had found success.

The program used value based drafting or VBD and it also was also customized with my leagues scoring system and simply made my decisions on draft day much easier. I wasn’t searching for a pick out of a magazine rather I had the best available picks right in front of me in descending order.

Now while sites like Draft Sharks were ahead of the curve in delivering technology to help you better determine your draft picks in the 90’s and early 2000’s they have been replaced by phone apps. Also CBS, ESPN, Yahoo, and even the NFL who now embrace fantasy football have devoted more resources to the game. They are all free so there is no need to pay someone.

It wasn’t the information that I received from Draft Sharks that made me a better fantasy football GM. Instead it was the tools they provided that helped me make better choices on draft day.

I stopped using draft sharks in 2003 when I went from league champion to second to from the bottom of the league. For the first time since playing fantasy football I had missed the playoffs in my big payout league. Draft Sharks would not give me a refund since they had no guarantees of winning me a thing.

Since that time I have not used one cent on a pay site to help me determine my fantasy football teams as well as never missing the playoffs and I won four more championships in big money leagues.

Which brings me back to free advice and there is no better advice then experience.

Fantasy Football Blogs will help you take your fantasy football game to the next level!

Who is better at giving fantasy football advice then some maniac with a passion for fantasy football and a lot of time to kill? Because let’s face it you have to enjoy something to write about it.

None of us wanted to write in high school because all topics sucked! However if were asked to write something were passionate about we would all would be using correct grammatical context. While my grammar is still a work in progress my fantasy football knowledge isn’t.

Here are some others who are just as passionate and I am not ashamed to admit do a much better job then me.

While this is just a handful of the many fantasy football bloggers out there I can assure you that there are many experienced experts with great fantasy football blogs that will help you.

While they’re not as flashy or have the bells and whistles to keep you stimulated as the bigger media sites the overall content is fantastic.  However if reading bores you, and obviously if you read this far it doesn’t, the next topic will be for the passive, lazy, and let’s face luckier fantasy football fan.

Can’t I just watch or listen to something instead of actually doing that reading thing.

Ok so your eyes strain when reading the menu at a restaurant or is the reason you prefer McDonalds because of all the nice pictures. While I don’t hate McDonalds I do hate the lazy bastard who walks in on draft day and talks about what he saw on NFL Fantasy Live last week.

The only research they did was listening to Adam Rank, Jason Smith, and Michael Fabiano discusses how Titans quarterback Jake Locker is on the verge of a breakout season. By the way they said that last season and he didn’t even start.

VIDEOS

  • NFL Fantasy Live is a… show… about fantasy football that has little or no insight whatsoever. It is really pathetic when I turn on a show and confuse an analyst for Andrew Zimmern. Then I change the channel to Bizarre Foods because at least I am going to be entertained watching Zimmern eating something that requires penicillin.
  • ESPN Fantasy Football Now is a much more informative fantasy football show. Host Mathew Berry is not afraid to go on a limb with his fantasy football advice instead of always playing it safe. I never see him debating over which fantasy football star is the better pick instead he will debate which is better for a PPR or standard scoring system.
  • Fox Fantasy Fix while Mike Harmon isn’t the stereotypical television personality

Beauty and the Beast on the Fox network?but putting him right beside the very attractive Crystina Poncher makes him look like he knows what he is talking about. With all kidding aside I like Harmon’s analysis and those attractive ladies beat looking at Adam Rank any day.

  • ProFootballWeekly has the great analysis but I struggle with some of the videos with all the graphics overshadowing those analysts. Wow little overkill on the sound effects.
  • CBSsports Dave, Jamey, and Nathan Zegura are all great at what they do but what is up with that crappy digital background? CBS drop a dime into production would you!

Now if you’re always on the run and don’t have time to watch videos you most likely would prefer a podcast. Podcast provide much more detailed information rather a brief discussion that is full of rhetoric.

So with all are information bases covered what else can we do to be ready for this year’s fantasy football draft?

Drafting Prep!

Ok so we’ve read up on all the latest news, analysis, and rumors. We have a draft formula and we want to test our theory for draft day. The best preparation for the draft is to practice your plan in a mock draft.

  • Fantasy Football Calculator is the best place to put your plan to the test in a mock draft. They have standard and PPR scoring, with or without a flex position, and leagues with 8, 10, 12, or up to 14 members in them. You can select the position you are drafting in and they also provide you with a link to the draft you participated in so that you can see where you might have reached or waited too long.
  • Fantasy Football Calculator also provides another very important benefit. Fantasy Football Calculator compiles all of the completed draft information and tabulates the approximate ADP (Average Draft Position) for each and every player. You know that saying that hindsight is twenty-twenty. Well with an accurate ADP you can predict your entire draft like you have ESP.
  • Want to know exactly how long it will take to wait to draft that deep sleeper try the scenario Calculator which will give you an idea of who will be available and when. So your first round draft pick is seventh overall click this link and see how likely Calvin Johnson will slip to seventh overall.

This is the only drafting prep you will need to be prepared for your fantasy football draft. This brings us to the only thing left to discuss about before you have your 2012 fantasy football draft.

Keep It Simple.

So you are in the seventh round of the draft you and need a third running-back and Arizona’s Ryan Williams is sliding to you. However you also have another slide on your hands as Dallas quarterback Tony Romo is falling to the first pick in round seven. While he hasn’t looked so hot in the preseason his numbers still make him a seventh round steal!

What do you do? When in doubt, don’t panic; simply go with your best guess.

If you read the links I supplied, use a cheat sheet or fantasy football draft app to identify positional needs during the draft, and most of all practice a mock drat you will be ready.

Remember the NFL Lockout changed everything and you won’t be the one using an old tired magazine on draft day. Instead you will be ready to have a competitive and even dominant team.

Five Big Fantasy Football Mistakes to Avoid in 2012

By Cris Benson

I believe that winning in fantasy football is a simple equation,

Draft Value + Regular Season Transactions = Making the Playoffs

Now I used to add “Making the Playoffs and Winning a Championship” however the truth is this game has one big problem. You have no control over anything that happens except your own roster and who’s starting in your lineup.

So what is Draft Value? Knowing who the best available fantasy football player is when your draft pick is called.

What are Regular Season Transactions? Knowing what the value of a fantasy football player is during the regular season when the draft is completed. Player value is in constant flux until the regular season begins making it difficult to accept that a high draft pick should have been graded lower and vice versa.

However this equation is missing just one thing and that is Dumb Luck!  Luck unfortunately plays a large role in the game of fantasy football. There is no better example of luck then the lottery.

Think of it this way, who is more likely to win a lottery if only 12 people play?  The first person who buys one ticket or the twelfth who buys twelve tickets? The twelfth person has increased their odds of winning twelve times greater than the first person, but the sixth person still could win even though they bought only six tickets.

Dumb luck still plays a role but the odds of the first person winning are next to nothing. Matter of fact the odds are more likely they come in dead last.

Do you want to be last?  Of course not so read this and have a plan of attack for the fantasy draft. Oh and of course Good Luck!

Now to increase our odds of winning lets reveal the 1st Fantasy Football Mistake!

Old vs New ‘My magazine is for draft day and that is when I use it’

Last season the NFL Lockout changed everything in regards to planning for fantasy football.

The lockout made magazines an awful source for info last season. Information was out of date and when the lockout ended NFL free agency was a week of absolute chaos.

Not to mention trades, the opening of NFL training camp, and injuries were constantly being reported. This was a whirlwind of news in the month of August 2011 that made the internet the only source for up to date fantasy football information.

The NFL lockout changed many things in the in NFL especially fantasy football.

The Lockout changed how people prepare for their fantasy football draft. Instead of an out of date magazine published in June after OTA’s had begun people are using sports media sites such as ESPN, SI.com, CBSsports, Rotoworld and NFL.com.

If you have a smart phone or a laptop with internet access you will had a huge advantage draft day over those with a magazine cheat sheet from 2011.  You had access to current and updated information from a trusted and reliable source.

As well as sites CBSsports, Fantasy Football Toolbox, and Fantasy Calculator that provide online tools that can help prep you for your draft. Finding a players value from draft expert, a player’s strength of schedule, and mock drafts to see practice your plan before draft day.

Those who use online applications will simply have the advantage compared to those with the out of date magazines come draft day.

Bad Planning ‘My strategy is to draft my starting lineup in the beginning of the draft’

I hate this! I hate seeing picks being wasted on locking up a power house starting lineups that is only doomed to have injuries, drug suspensions, and other possible catastrophes.

This is a useless strategy because for one the NFL has bye weeks and even starters have to sit on your bench. Also you miss out on bench depth and trade vale by throwing away your 7th or 8th round picks on a kicker!

Kickers are always the last draft pick but I will get back to this!

Here is a more practical strategy I have found and it works.

Lock up running backs earl with your first three picks of the draft this year since they are really slim.

You need running-backs! They are capable of scoring in more ways than one. Your wide-receivers and tight-ends are always going to catch not run where a running back can do both. Plus the value at wide receiver is deep this season which it may not be a bad idea to take a top five tight-end with your fourth overall pick. Last season a tight-end was more valuable than some top tier wide-receivers and I have a feeling that we will see more scoring tight-ends in the 2012 NFL season. Keep in mind that if you are playing in a PPR league a tight-end will carry less value.

The reason why a quarterback is not as valuable is that the range of scoring for quarterbacks from last to first isn’t significant as the range for running-backs. Yes we saw QB’s explode last season but their value is never consistent. They also have to depend too much on fellow players such as receivers and especially offensive lines.

In most leagues we play two running backs, two wide receivers, and one quarterback, how many running backs start in the NFL?  Only thirty two and the overwhelming majority are in an offense that shares carries. A bell cow running-back has much more value than a starting quarterback who will has a much less significant scoring differential. Running-backs have more potential to have scoring plays than any other player on the field.

Only take one defense, and one kicker.  I know what you’re saying, ‘But What About the Bye Week!’ just listen to me.

When the bye week comes for this position you add a kicker and drop your kicker unless your kicker is a top five kicker trust me you will find a kicker on the waiver wire.

Dropping that kicker may be the best move you can make.  Adding a kicker who kicks indoors or in fair weather in December is a great move.

Kicker is your last pick in the draft and there is no such thing as a top tier kicker! They all hit or miss! The only thing you should care about is how many attempts they will get to add extra points because NFL kickers are all very good some just kick more than others.

Defense is different from the kicker position a great defense can make a difference in a game and they can turn a bad team into a team that finds a way to win.

I recommend locking a defense when the run on them begins in the 9th or 10th round but no earlier than that since other positions have the depth you want.  Think of it this way do you need a defense in week three if a starting running back goes down and you don’t have a solid back up on your bench because you drafted a kicker or defense to early.

Love and Hate ‘Is it ok to fall in love with or hate a guy and Yes Cam I blew it last season and thought you were done for but not this one.never pick him?’

Yes and No, the reason is you have to know when value outweighs your gut.

This was my advice last season; “Kevin Kolb is great example…Kolb has a new team and that can change a player’s fantasy football value tremendously for better or worse.  However Kevin Kolb’s value is difficult to gauge.  Even the experts are not certain on Kolb’s overall value given his track record of boom or bust.”

While last season’s advice on Kevin Kolb’s bloated value was correct on the other hand I also made the mistake of hating Cam Newton last season; The best thing for Cam Newton is a NFL bench.  Newton needs to sit and develop in practice reps, study film, and when called on have his chance to shine as a NFL star”.

I didn’t take my own advice and pigeon holed Newton. That was stupid.

So I will type this again and try to read it so I don’t forget.

Think with your head and do not be a homer but also don’t pass on a guy due to past experience.

KNOW YOUR SCORING SYSTEM! ‘How many points is a touchdown worth?’

No two leagues are completely alike and that makes everyone’s player values different.

Every leagues scoring system, number of starters at a single position, and number of teams makes for different player values.

While you’re league gives QB’s 6 points for a TD pass I may only receive the traditional 4 points.

Some leagues have tight ends while others have a flex position.

One recommendation I will make to you is the higher the points system the less likely you should join that league especially if you a beginner.

As well as the lower the points (TD only scoring based league) the simpler it is to play as a beginner but no fun for a veteran fantasy football GM.

A bonus crazy league is no fun when you get points for just touching a ball. Complex scoring systems were created for guys who think they should reinvent the wheel but in the end it is still round and is used for going places. What’s the point?

So once again keep things simple and don’t over load bonus points.

Winning! ‘My draft is over I have a championship team now I can sit back and collect my trophy in January!’

Remember the equation above because this is just the beginning of the process. Now comes the hard part.

You have been dealt the face cards so everyone knows how many aces you have in your hand.  However what they don’t know is you have five guys on the bench that can be potential sleepers and those aces are potential bust after week seven.

Know what you have and plan ahead by researching your player’s bye weeks, schedule difficulty, and injury history. Then plan when to add drop and look for trade bait from a guy who scores three touchdowns on your bench that your pretty certain was a fluke.

Find the guy who drafted from a magazine and trade with him because that guy knows nothing but the bad advice he took from his magazine.  That guy locks on players and has a master plan to ride them into the fantasy football sunset.

Listen the guy that grinds out the bad weeks and makes the playoffs tends to be the guy that wins the championship. The guy with the most overall fantasy football strategy knowledge not just football knowledge is the one who will ride into the sunset.

This is a game and if you want to win you have to learn how to play just like any other game.

So follow these examples, begin mock drafting, and remember some good luck on draft day never hurts.

If you want a RB first, a WR first, or if you want porn start mustache Aaron Rodgers first David Gonos covers it all!

SI.com David Gonos provides some help in selecting your path to the 2012 fantasy football draft.  If you prefer RB, QB, or a WR in the first round Gonos gives a simple plan of attack that will help you find targets in the following rounds after that first pick.

While most of us have our own plans on draft day their is no shame in taking this plan for the novice beginner who will need a little help.

Fantasy Football is About Watching NFL Games Not Stats!

Lately every time I read a fantasy football post it is nothing more then a review of last years stats. Some of us are sick hearing about last year’s NFL stats.

I want to know what is going on now in the NFL and how it will affect my choices on draft day.

Will the Jaguars become a pass oriented offense with Maurice Jones How is MJD's hold out going to change the look of the Jags offense is something stats cannot reveal.Drew holding out even though new head coach Mike Mularkey was run heavy with Falcons RB Michael Turner? Will the Green Bay Packers rely on Aaron Rodgers arm less often now that Joe Philbin is coaching the Dolphins? Are the San Francisco 49ers on the verge of having another explosive offense?

However fantasy “experts” aren’t very good at breaking down game plans, schemes, and player technique. Nor should you rely on them for that assessment since most rely on their fantasy imagination. They simply don’t have that kind of insight to what happens in the game of NFL football.

While most beat writers have vast knowledge on what a NFL team is doing some are not a good source for the more detailed information that only players and coaches can provide.

Hub Arkush has been the publisher, editor, and journalist of Pro Football Weekly for over 30 years, was a color man for the Chicago Bears radio broadcast, and has been the sideline reporter for DialGlobal Sports Radio (formerly West Wood One Radio) for over three seasons including covering the Super Bowl XLVI.

One of the reasons I subscribe to Pro Football Weekly is that Publisher Hub Arkush who is the closest a reporter can come to a coach/player is never ashamed to admit that coaches and players are the overall professional opinion.

With that said it doesn’t mean that coaches and players are always right either.

When seeking advice fantasy enthusiast need to listen to coaches and former players who understand what they are saying when it comes to breaking down more difficult observations.

Now you may be saying; ‘What does that have to do with fantasy football’? The answer is everything!

Consider the possibilities of the current situation in New York with Giants corner-back Terrell Thomas’s injury.

  • How is this going to affect the NYG defense and could this cause more shootouts at QB? Could this drive the Giants to have another pass heavy year making Eli Manning a better option at QB over some others?
  • How will this affect Dallas QB Tony Romo, Philladelphia QB Michael Vick, and Washington rookie QB RGIII? Will this drive them to be pass heavy against the Giants since they play each other six times.
  • Will all the passing drop the value of Giants running-backs Bradshaw and Wilson?
  • Or will last year’s first round draft pick Prince Amukamara finally step up and play like a shutdown corner?

I don’t know what the answer is but when you follow nothing but last season stats instead of current news you begin to get lost in silly details instead of watching the game. You miss these more serious details and fail to realize what is really going on.

Fantasy football is not rotisserie baseball that is based on sabermetrics and encourages you to make decisions based on nothing but previous stats.

Did you see the movie “Money Ball” and believe sabermetrics is the solution to all the world’s problems? Well keep this in mind. Peter Brand is a fictional character based on several people including Paul DePodesta and Billy Beane is no Brad Pitt. It’s a MOVIE!

Basically while the story is revisionist history in the sense that the A’s won on the cheap the majority of the story is BS.

So is using strictly stats to assemble a fantasy football team instead of being more diverse in whom you take advice from.

Fantasy football is about planning on a week to week need that is loaded with intangibles that cannot be solved with math formulas and analytical analysis. Fantasy football requires a subjective and narrow-minded opinion that is beyond calculations, algorithms, and theorems.

The difference between baseball managers and football coaches is simple.

Baseball is all about knowing the match ups.

For example can my lefty starting pitcher (era 4.0) match up against the five lefty batters in the opposing team’s lineup. The baseball manager thinks it may be time to start my right handed ace pitcher (era 0.9) that may struggle with lefties yet can mow down the four right handed batters.

Football is about the game plan. A football coach will never abandon the running game even when facing the best run defense. Football coaches simply adjust the game plan by finding which side of the defense is weaker and attack that side. When the defense has made an adjustment then run a counter play to throw the defense off.

You see football coaches are all about organization. From the depth chart, to coaching staff, and the way the team approaches the game plan. It is all about organization.

Fantasy Football GM’s/coaches also has to be organized. We have to pay attention to the current news rather than get lost in the details of last season’s stats.

The best fantasy football teams are not made on draft day rather they are made during the season when changes need to be made on a week to week basis. However we don’t divert form our draft day game plan instead we study the game and find diamonds in the rough.

Don’t let the fantasy stat geeks tell you that your insight to NFL football and even Pop Warner is useless. While they can probably tell you who the leading receiver was in games that were played in domes as opposed to outdoors and other useless statistical observation. Ask them to recognize formations, coverage, and simply identifying what is going on the field of play without playing John Madden football and they will struggle.

That is the problem when you’re submerged in fantasy football stats you don’t watch the game in front of you insteasd you watch numbers.
